Before buying an American Mahjong set, ask for an itemized tile and accessory list. A package advertised with 160 tiles tells you how many tiles arrive, but does not by itself tell you which tiles are extras or which table accessories are included.
Separate the play set from the package count
Standard American Mahjong uses a 152-tile core. The American Mah Jongg Association’s rules overview describes the core game equipment and current-year card. For an introduction to play, visit Mahla’s beginner guide.
The core contains 36 Dots, 36 Bams, 36 Craks, 16 Winds, 12 Dragons, eight Flowers and eight Jokers. A package may add spare tiles. Keep those extras separate when checking what is used in play.
Identify the additional tiles
For each listing, check the identities as well as the quantity of extra tiles. Additional Blanks or spare Jokers should not automatically be added to the standard play set.
Sweet Afternoon contains 160 tiles: 152 core American Mahjong tiles plus eight spare Blank tiles. The Blanks are packaging extras; the total does not create a different 160-tile gameplay rule.
Use a separate accessory checklist
Sweet Afternoon’s included package contains:
- 160 tiles, including the eight spare Blanks

- Wind indicator
- 100 scoring chips: 20 in each of five colors
- Three dice
- Storage bag and gift box
For any set you are considering, check racks, pushers, a playing mat and an annual card separately. Do not treat props in a styled photograph as included items. A general How to Play Guide does not replace the current annual card when your group plays NMJL card hands.
Check delivery and returns before buying
Read the product’s current dispatch estimate separately from the estimated transit time. Check shipping costs and the return conditions before checkout, especially for made-to-order or personalized products. An estimated delivery date is not a guaranteed arrival date.
Make one final check in the cart
Confirm the selected tile option and quantity, and compare them with the package list. If a particular extra tile or accessory is essential to your game night, resolve the question with the seller before ordering.
